Comprehensive Basic Obedience Course

Equipment Needed:

  • Proper Fitting Nylon or Chain Correction Collar
  • 6 Ft. Leather or Nylon Lead
  • 15-20 Foot Nylon or Cotton Web Long line
  • Play Article (fist sized Ball on a string or Training Tug)
  • 100 -150 small soft Training Food
  • Apron, Training vest, or pocketed jacket or vest
  • Proper Fitting Prong Collar
  • Training Tab

Week 1:

  • Intro. / Pass out all necessary Info. and Handouts 
  • Dog in White to Demo Graduation Exercises??
  • Open Sit exercise
  • Long sit exercise 10 min. No "Stay" command used
  • Start of the "Down"  on elevated surface
  • Start of the "Stand" on elevated surface
  • "Focus" Responding to Name by looking and maintaing eye contact
  • Start of Walking on Lead with an automatic sit/ Pace Normal/Turns: About Turns only/ No "Heel" command is used  Casual command of "Let`s Go" used
  • Discuss Starting the "Come" command at home through the use of the Meal  (6-10x in each workable room throughout the house incl. yard and in front of the house on the houselead)
  • End Class with structured style Play: get the dog excited about the toy/

Week 2:

  • Open sit w/ No Hand Movement , Mild distractions implemented
  • Long Sit 10 min. w/  Distraction Mild Noise, balls etc.
  • Changes of position (Sit Down Stand) on elevated surface directly in front of Dog: We are looking for the dog to perform the commands with little to No help from the Handler.  The Elevated surface keeps the dog in location so the Handler can focus on the changes and rewarding
  • Sit/Stay Stepping out, back and around ( on floor)
  • Down/Stay  3-10 seconds No movement by Handler/Repeat  (floor or elevated Surface)
  • Stand/Stay  3-10 seconds No movement by Handler/Repeat (floor or elevated surface)
  • Start of the Physical Examination (on elevated surface)
  • Focus work: Start Demanding that your dog maintain eye contact when mild distraction is present
  • Continue Walking on Lead./ Introduce Pace Changes of Fast and Slow / Introduce the purpose of Circles.
  • Discuss and Demo Round Robin Recall for home practice
  • Begin introducing the first 3 exercises of the CGC.
    1) Accepting a friendly Stranger
    2) Sitting Politely for Petting
    3) Appearance and Grooming (performed on elevated surface)
  • Discuss and Demo Muzzle and collar work with food
  • Discuss and Demo Going in and out of a crate
  • Discuss and Demo Going through Doorways and Gates correctly
  • End Class wih structured Style Play with Play Article

Week 3:  

  • Sit/Stay by Handler`s side, Heavy distractions present.  I continuously bounce a ball as I walk back and forth across the room to start, gradually increasing my proximity to the dogs. One dog will be selected to "play" with the Ball while the others Stay. We also will begin Step 1 of Food Refusal by tossing lightweight inedible objects at the dogs feet.
  • Down/Stay On Handler`s side through Distractions.  (On ground, Handler gently stepping on lead) Food Refusal tossed pieces also.
  • Stand/Stay Step out back and around with doll rod placed gently under belly. (floor or elevated surface)
  • Introduce and Demo calling Dog away from Distraction
  • More Walking on Lead: Introduce mild distractions: Continue working on Automatic Sit upon Stopping- Figure 8 with Food
  • Begin working "The Clock" and/or Turns in Place , lure the Dog into the Heel Position from different positions: using the command of "Heel"
  • Continue Focus work: Begin the focused "Heel". Taking only one to a few steps with the dog "watching" the Handler attentively:Release
  • Introduce and Demo the Next 3 Exercises of the CGC
    1) Out for a Walk
    2) Walking through a Crowd
    3) Sit and Down on Command/Staying in Place
  • End Class wih structured Style Play with Play Article 

Week 4:

  • Step 3 of Food Refusal, Dog is in a Sit on Handler`s side while Food objects are tossed to him
  • Walking through a Crowd
  • Figure 8 around Handler`s with their dogs
  • Increase Focus work with distractions and Focused Heeling Work increase amount of steps that dog will take well.
  • Continue Walking on Lead incorpoarting Pace Changes turns and circles
  • Start With Lead over the Shoulder in the Walking on Lead
  • Work on all Stay Exercises: Handlers moving freely, with distractions present
  • Changes of Position: on the side and in front to the end of the Lead ( on elevated surface)
  • Continue working physical Examinations
  • Begin "Come Fore" exercise
  • Discuss and Demo "Open Recall" to be practiced at home
  • Discuss and Demo Round Robin Recall to be practiced at home
  • Discuss and Demo "Doggie Exchange"
  • End Class wih structured Style Play with Play Article 

Week 5:

  • Stay Commands (Sit and Down) 6 & 15 foot Leads, mild distractions from farthest point of the room. Increase Duration.
  • Stand/Stay on Floor w/ Light AKC Style Exam with Handler in Front or to the side.  Lightweight Doll Rod used if needed.
  • Comprehensive Physical Examinations on Elevated surface
  • Formal Recall Started using "Wait" command (No finish command)
  • Finish Command for Recall done separately
  • Changes of positions on side on Floor and from a 6-10 foot distance on elevated surface
  • Walking on Lead, passing distractions, passing other dogs in close proximity.
  • CGC Supervised Isolation Exercise
  • End Class wih structured Style Play with Play Article 

Week 6:  

  • Stand/Stay on Floor w/ Light AKC Style Exam.  Handler out to the end of the 6 foot lead. Return.
  • Runthrough of all CGC Exercises in their entirity
  • Formal Recall
  • Finish
  • Long Stays
  • Explain beginning of Stays out of Sight
  • Continue Working On Heeling On Lead Lead and Focused Attention
  • Introduce Heeling Off Lead by Tethering and Circles with Traffic Lead
  • Comprehensive Physical Examinations
  • Doggie Exchange
  • End Class wih structured Style Play with Play Article (demo the Motivational Retrieve for future class) 

Week 7:

  • Fun and Games Week!  Win a Prize!

Focus:  Heel/Sit/Down/Stay/Come

  • Relay Races (Pass the Big Rawhide)
  • The Snake  (how far can you weave through distractions w/o correcting your dog!)
  • Fastest Number of Sits and Downs in a Time Frame...(No physical Handling)
  • Last Man Standing Stays ( Distraction!!!  Sit and Down only)
  • Whose Dog is a Listening?  (Recalling from Numerous Distractions)
  • End Class w/ Start of Introducing the Motivational Retrieve with their play Article

Week 8:

  • Long recall perpendicular to all other Handlers while their dogs are required to Stay next to the   Handler`s side.
  • Go through all exercises and look at what needs work
  • Proof all exercises
  • End Class w/ Motivational Retrieve with their play Article

Week 9:

Pred-  Formal Grad Run throughs/Final Proofing

  • Accepting a Friendly Stranger
  • Sitting Politely for Petting (Both part of Greeting the Judge before Trialing)
  • Full Heeling/Walking on Lead pattern including Pace Changes, Turns, and Multiple Stops
  • Figure 8 Heeling on Lead
  • Walking through a Crowd that is in Motion
  • Approaching and Passing another Dog
  • Approaching and Passing Distractions and a Weird Stranger
  • AKC Style Stand for Exam on Floor
  • Comprehensive Physical Exam on elevated surface
  • Formal Recall with Sit (No Finish Command required)
  • Sit and Down on Command
  • Sit/Stay 1 Min.
  • Down/Stay 3 Min.

Week 10: 

  • Dog in White
  • Formal Graduation
